The mobility industry is a growing market with changing requirements for accessibility needs increasing as the population ages and medical advances strengthen. As a family run business, we feel it vital to be able to support our local community and to give back where we can. Helping to create a sustainable future that is inclusive, and re-gaining the sense of community so readily lost in this ever-changing world of technological advances.
We have been delighted to be able to accommodate some work experience for Wilf over the summer. Knowing we had provided accessibility solutions for the turning tides project, Wilf’s parents got in touch to ask us if we could help Wilf gain some real-life work experience and we were very happy to able to oblige.
From an engineering background originally, Ben joined us in 2019 to get back to his career roots and is now part of our on-going training programme, regularly training our new recruits. Ben has been showing Wilf many of the warehouse duties involved in prepping and inspecting lifts ready to be installed and using the skills he leaned working with additional needs adults before coming to Dolphin, Ben thoroughly and naturally enjoyed spending time with Wilf. Ben says ‘I’ve enjoyed wilf coming in over the last few months. He has grown in confidence being around the yard and interacting with everyone, which has seen his knowledge of how we do things increase each week.’
Below is a testimonial from Wilf’s parents about his time at Dolphin.
‘Wilf, our 18 year old son, has always needed to attend a specialist school setting due to his learning disabilities.
As parents, we know that his chances of gaining employment will be very limited, so keen for Wilf to experience a ‘real life’ working environment, we approached Dolphin to see if they could offer Wilf some voluntary work during the summer holidays.
Well, what can we say, Dolphin could not have been more accommodating. Wilf has been attending regularly throughout the summer and there is definitely no substitute for being in a real working environment. Wilf is thoroughly enjoying it. Ben, Wilfs mentor, has shown patience and understanding of Wilfs needs. Wilf, meanwhile has learnt practical skills and had the opportunity to experience fun, life and work beyond college. It has been invaluable for Wilf.
As parents, it is wonderful to see Wilf thriving in this setting.
A huge thank you to Perry, Antonia, Ben and the Dolphin Team.
